The criteria and considerations governing the size and the shape of a pump station are as follows:
- Depth of the ground level to input pipe
- The distance and height from the pump sump to the point of discharge
- The volume of effluent to be pumped daily or the total number of bedrooms in a housing scheme or the number or employees in an industrial area or the surface area to be drained
- Is there a 3 phase or single phase electricity supply available
- Whether a rising main* is already installed and the pipe diameter
- What is being pumped i.e. sewage or surface water or other effluent
- Whether discharge is into a private or public treatment system or other
- Is the system to be handed over to the Local Authority in the future
*Rising main should be decided on at the design stage as it is a critical factor in the overall efficiency of the pump station.
